POSITION: Support Worker
REPORTS TO: Program Director
ALLOTTED HOURS: 8-40 hrs/week dependent on casual, part-time or full-time status

MINISTRY CONTEXT

LIFE Recovery Association (LIFE) is a registered charity and Christian ministry that exists to support women in recovery from addiction. Employees of LIFE agree with the Code of Ethics, Community Standards Policy, Mission, Statement of Faith, Vision, and Core Values. LIFE operates 4 residential recovery homes in Abbotsford, BC

JOB SUMMARY - PRIMARY FOCUS

The Support Worker is responsible for providing support to clients and co-workers at LIFE’s First Stage Recovery Program. This position involves working with clients who may have only recently made a commitment to sobriety and are still experiencing the effects of detox or withdrawal. The ability to function independently and under pressure, while managing multiple concurrent tasks including emergency situations is an ongoing expectation of this position.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

​​Support LIFE’s clients:

  • Provides oversight during on site and off site programming

  • Encourages participation in programs and activities

  • Recognizes changes in client behaviours and/or moods and addresses or reports these as appropriate

Support LIFE’s staff:

  • Develops supportive relationships

  • Assists in the leading of the programs as directed by the Supervisor on shift

  • When requested by the Program Director, participates in client assessment, goal setting and personal service plans

  • Completes tasks assigned by Program Director and Program Administrator to facilitate day-today operations

Support LIFE’s program:

  • Documents client requests for medication

  • Identifies potential problems, makes effort to address and de-escalate

  • Reports any difficulties to Supervisor and logs all incidents

  • Conducts random room checks

  • Transports clients to appointments and offsite activities

  • Assists with meal preparation, inventory and purchasing of supplies

  • Maintains safety, hygiene, health and cleanliness standards of residences and vehicles

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • As required under the Assisted Living Act: “a course, or a combination of courses, of at least
    20 hours duration in one or more of the following subjects:

    • counselling;

    • crisis intervention and conflict resolution;

    • psychosocial intervention for substance use disorders;

    • trauma-informed practice”

  • As required under the Assisted Living Act, “Evidence that the person has complied with the
    Province's immunization and tuberculosis control programs”

  • Minimum of one (1) year recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience

  • Strong analytical skills and decision-making ability

  • Demonstrated ability to deal with highly sensitive and confidential material and situations

  • Current Class 5 Drivers License (minimum)

  • Current Naloxone, Food Safe and First Aid Certification

  • Sobriety of at least TWO years i.e., no abuse of alcohol, drugs, or other mood-altering chemicals.

  • Reputation of living a lifestyle that honors and glorifies God - regularly attends and participates in a home church (Heb 10:24-25)

  • Knowledge of alcohol & drug and mental health disorders is an asset.

This is a 24/7 operation with an 8 week schedule rotation.


Shifts are assigned by seniority, thus newer staff should expect to be scheduled days,
evenings, overnight, weekday, weekend and holidays.


Full time is defined as 35-40 hours weekly.


Part time is defined as 18 or more hours weekly.


After successful completion of the probationary period, employees working more than 30
hours per week on a regular permanent basis will be eligible for extended health and dental
benefits and 2 weeks of vacation annually.


The wage range is $19.00- $22.00 per hour based on experience and education.
